Six men were arrested after police and custom officials raided a warehouse in Aradippou in Larnaca and found ten tonnes of tobacco worth €2 million in unpaid taxes. It is thought this is the largest seizure of illegal tobacco in Cyprus customs history.
Police entered the warehouse at 12.30pm in a joint operation with custom officials on Monday and found the tobacco laid out on the floor. It is believed the tobacco was illegally imported from Bangladesh
Customs spokesman Christos Christou said: “Five people of African descent were found, and there are serious indicators they are illegally in Cyprus.”
This is the second time this year a large haul of illegal tobacco has been seized. In April, customs found 10 million cigarettes worth €1.68m in unpaid taxes.
Customs found the cigarettes during a routine check on a container from Singapore.
